In this edition of What I’ve Been Reading, we explore our terrifying future.

  • In the future, ants will reign over us, even without queens. Annalee Newitz of Ars Technica writes about a weird ant colony in Templewo, Poland in an abandoned nuclear weapons bunker that doesn’t have any queens.
  • In the future, consoles will no longer be machines whose specs stay consistent for an entire cycle. With Xbox’s Project Scorpio and Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro, the console environment is about to become a lot more complicated. Stephen Totilo of Kotaku explains what the PS4 Pro means for the PlayStation ecosystem. My take: this is an expensive, poorly-thought gamble that won’t pay off. People don’t have 4K TVs, and moreover, people don’t want to buy a new console every three years.
  • In the future, the US Open still won’t have its shit together. Carl Bialik of FiveThirtyEight explains that many of the tournament’s players are missing photos on its official website. For fuck’s sake, USTA.

Fuck the future, man. I’m outta here.
