It’s been a while since we last saw each other. How are things going? I love your new haircut. Oh my gosh, did you lose weight? Wow! How are your parents doing? Still keeping on?
Anyway, let’s chat about concerts, polio, and Psychonauts.

This blog’s most time-honoured tradition returns. 2021 fucking sucked. A global pandemic raged on, the rich continued to get richer, and uncontrollable forest fires demonstrated that global warming’s effects are already here. Simply put, shit’s fucked. Viewed in that light, talking about pop-cultural disappointments feels petty. But you know what? This is my personal blog, and I’m allowed be petty and laugh at stupid things. So that’s what I’m going to do, as I’ve done every year since… -searches blog- holy shit I’ve been doing this since 2011??? How have I not lost my fucking mind yet???
A reminder: these aren’t necessarily the worst aspects of pop culture in 2021. They’re just the things that disappointed me the most, personally. So without further ado, I bring you 2021: the year in shit.

It’s been a while since we’ve checked in with each other. How are you doing? Are you doing okay? Are you feeling comfortable in your skin? Would you like to slither out of that skin and grow a new one? How digested is that rat you swallowed whole? Don’t you think that legs are stupid and useless? Isn’t having a forked tongue cool?
Anyway, today we’re talking about COVID, nature, and tech.

As March rolls on and winter wanes, people are still writing things on the Internet. Such is the way of the world. This week, we’re talking about sandwiches, journalism, and video game release dates.

This week’s What I’ve Been Reading has ended up being a monthly round-up of links from February and earlier. I don’t intend for WIBR to become a monthly round-up, but sometimes that’s just how the chips fall. C’est la vie.
In any case, this Sunday I’ve got articles about Colin Jost, Joss Whedon, and of course, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Every year, I run down the biggest pop culture disappointments of the past 12 months. This time around, it’s tempting to just write, “THERE WAS (AND STILL IS) A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, YOU MORONS,” and simply leave it at that. But 2020 brought a lot of disappointing pop culture, so in contrast to last year, when the list filled up with scandals, I have actual creative works to discuss this time around. Silver linings: take ’em when you see ’em.
A reminder: these aren’t necessarily the worst aspects of pop culture in 2020. These are the things that made me feel the worst. Sometimes they’re things that had the potential to be good, but fell flat. Other times, they truly are just turds. With that out of the way, let’s roll up our sleeves and get elbow-deep in shit.

This is a pretty heavy edition of What I’ve Been Reading, because why not head into the last month of this garbage year being as depressing as possible? We’re going to talk about COVID, Pornhub, and labour.

Like most things in life, What I’ve Been Reading keeps on trucking on. Today we’re talking about BNA: Brand New Animal, tech’s relationship with capitalism, and scandals in medicine and gaming.

It’s been over a month since I last blogged here, mostly due to my hectic and packed real-life schedule. But I would be remiss if I were to let the entire month of September go with nary a blog post, so here I am, with some month-old articles and some newer ones.
